Up front: The Odyssey has as much interior width as a pickup truck. There’s enough space in the centre floor storage for a large purse and a deep centre console for storing water bottles. Wireless Apple CarPlay works every time and charging options include a wireless charging pad, USB-A and USB-C.
The leather seats with lumbar support come standard, as does two memory settings for the driver’s side seat. The dials and buttons are tactile and easy to use. A small front row-only sunroof should’ve been bigger.
In the back: The second row reclines manually and has plenty of legroom. The middle seat folds down into a large armrest with three cupholders. The doors slide electrically, making ingress and egress easy even in tight parking spots. Can we get sliding front doors too, please?
The third row has one air ent on each side and can fit two adults under six feet tall comfortably. This row folds down 60/40 into the boot cavity, forming a flat loading area. It’s possible for five adults to travel on long road trips comfortably in this eight-seater. With the third row up, the boot cavity can fit four medium-sized suitcases.
Driving: The naturally aspirated 3.5-litre V6 is easy to drive with linear acceleration. It’s been a Honda standard for a long time and will likely last much longer. The 280 horsepower motor comes with a brisk sport mode for highway merging and flappy paddle gear shifters for manual control. You won’t be going very fast, but it’s comforting to know that you can, and that ending braking downhill is an option.
The ride is smooth and comfortable, but the large cabin means tire noise echoes around the cabin. Closing the sunroof shade helps a little bit, but podcasts need to be turned way up to be heard clearly on the highway. It’s suggest all wheel drive for putting power down onto the road, the front-wheel drive version tends to spin its tires on hard acceleration.
