Open air concerts, fireworks, meeting Benjamin Franklin in the flesh, and having huge hot dogs for lunch, all this means the 4th of July in Washington, D.C. I’ve only watched movies about Americans having barbecues and setting off fireworks on this festive date and never experienced it myself. Being there felt a little uneasy at first because of all the policemen around, but after you get in a party mood you can hardly notice them.
As expected, American food quality leaves much to be desired, but the portions certainly don’t disappoint. Everything is free there, which is great for a poor student like myself, I could see as much as I liked without being hindered by a thin wallet. That night, I watched the fireworks display under the Washington Monument with hundreds of others. Bring plenty of water – and a lawnchair.
