Aarburg is just one of the few places along the river Aare that start with two a’s, other names include Aarau and Aargau. Its train station is a little out of the way so you will find the walk a little boring, there’s nothing to see along the way to the castle. When you do manage to hike up the castle, you’ll find that you can’t actually visit it because it is now a detention centre for male juvenile offenders. That said, I think you’ll still find it interesting that the town was named after this castle.
There is a church at the end of the castle complex, but you will have to make your way down the mountain and up another trail to get there. Being at the front of the complex, the church offers a great view of the valley and the main line train services. Take the IC5 between Zürich and Geneva and you’ll pass by this glorious hilltop complex along the way.
Down by the river at the town of Aarburg, you’ll find a little trail with information on a natural phenomena in the river. Due to the shape of the river and the riverbed, there are four permanent whirlpools that disrupt the flow of the river.
