A half-hourly ferry connects Amherst Island to Millhaven, Ontario, near Kingston. The gravel roads are a lot of fun to drive on, so much fun that I saw an elderly man skilled around corners in a small Honda hatchback. There isn’t much commerce on the island, so many of the residents are retired.

The most exciting thing I saw during my short time there was a farmer loading about a dozen sheep onto a trailer. The island’s agriculture game is strong, but its green energy game is even stronger. The windy island is home to dozens of wind turbines dotted all over the place. You can hear them woosh with every revolution as you drive past.

I don’t know if it was the winter weather or the remoteness of the place, but the beaches had nobody on them and I found it quite refreshing to have a private beach. Both Back Beach and Sand Beach have great rocky terrain for a foot massage – or for piling up stones.

St. Bartholomew’s Church, unlike the beaches, fact the north shore so you can see the mainland, which is less than two kilometres away.
