In the suburbs of Boston where the metro’s Red Line stops, a classic tramway extends its rail service far beyond the city limits. The Ashmont-Mattapan Express uses original PCC cars designed in the 1930’s to ferry commuters in and out of Boston city.
Although the system reminds passengers of the heyday of rail travel in America before the GM scandal, it is by no means an antiquated system. There are fully accessible platforms, clean cars, and digital timetables informing riders of the schedule accurate to the minute.
Apart from San Francisco and Yakima, Boston is about one of the few remaining systems where the public can ride scheduled services of historical trams in the country.
My favourite part of the ride? The vintage livery that puts the cherry on the cake.
