I didn’t have much of an incentive to visit. After all, how can an art museum in a small town like Dover in a small state like Delaware wow me? But I decided to visit anyways because admission is free for students and the museum said it was on American art.

I’ve never been disappointed by a well-crafted American art exhibition. Biggs Museum is tastefully focused on regional landscape art, music, Art Deco glassware, and Second Empire furniture. Each room is clearly labeled with time period, influence, and context: and each piece is relevant to local history.

I’m beginning to think that small American towns can have meaningful museums that merge both art and history to tell its story. The harp in the museum’s ground floor reminded me that art isn’t just visual, it includes all the senses.
