Bremerhaven is in the state of Bremen, yet it is separated from its capital of Bremen by about an hour of Lower Saxony. The exclave of Bremerhaven is right by the sea so it forms a part of the Hanseatic League.

The harbour harbours several museums and museum ships. The German Maritime Museum allows visitors to board their museum ships for an extra fee during the warm months of summer. There’s also a separate submarine museum not unlike the one in Hamburg.

Being a harbour also made Bremerhaven the perfect place for emigration out of Germany to America. There is a German Migration Center on this subject and it is a highly recommended visit to learn more about German history. In fact, there were so many Germans in America that if it wasn’t for the war, German might have come close to being the national language there.
