Cincinnati is home to William Howard Taft’s family, he was the 27th US president. It’s also home to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, the best place to begin an educational trail to learn all about the Underground Railroad to freedom in Canada.
Liberty Street used to be the northern boundary of Cincinnati, the area is the most historic neighbourhood of the city. It was beyond the reach of municipal law and attracted bootleggers, brothers, saloons, and other unsavoury enterprises. The area attracted Catholics after the first Catholic Church was built and tolerance for those businesses waned. The area north of Liberty Street has been home to Findlay Market since 1852.
The 170-year-old public market is the only one of eight that survives today. It still sells fish, meat, and fresh fruits and vegetables like many American city markets of the 19th century.
