The ticking counter person taught me to exchange my Legion of Honor ticket for a de Young Museum ticket so I could visit both museums for free on a free day. I only skimmed the ground floor because I’m not that interested in contemporary art and abstract representation. I stopped by to admire Chihuly glass, but it has nothing on Seattle. There was also a room of Native American art, but the hodge-podge collection is nowhere near as extensive as the museums of Regina or Winnipeg.

Instead of art, the upstairs has an assortment of African artifacts, more akin to a study of anthropology. I wish there were maps to show where each object came from for clearer contextualization. The American art was disappointing. Although both Sargeant and Prendergast made an appearance, none of their famous works were displayed. Instead, there was a small picture of a famous work, like Madame X in New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, as context. The landscapes, though good, were cliché depictions of Niagara Falls and Lake Tahoe. I expected more from San Francisco.
