I visited the US and found some flavours unavailable in the Canadian market. Honey Barbecue is one of them. Then, I found a Lays x Doritos flavour mashup featuring the Bar B Q variety of Lays and Sweet Chilli Heat! Doritos, which I think has too much punctuation.
Honey Barbecue
Imitation: 7/10. Lots of honey, not a lot of barbecue, but it is one of the better BBQ flavours.
Desirability: 6/10. The brown sugar, molasses, and caramel colouring make it an appealing choice for under-18s.
Crunch: 8/10. Lots of bubbly and folded-over pieces, as good as it gets without going Ruffles.
Texture: 6/10. A little thicker, a little more to feel than average.
Appearance: 6/10. The reddish color with specks of what looks to be pepper matches how it tastes.
Total: 33/50. Not a bad choice for a younger crowd.
Bar-B-Q + Sweet Chilli Heat!
Imitation: 5/10. The barbecue taste exists in the background, but the attempt to mix hot chilli with brown sugar and molasses has resulted in a disaster on the Doritos front.
Desirability: 2/10. It’s great if you can’t tolerate too much spicy food, but if you grew up in a flavourful environment you’d be massively disappointed.
Crunch: 7/10. Thin and curvy makes it lovely.
Texture: 4/10. About average.
Appearance: 3/10. The light color doesn’t convey spiciness convincingly.
Total: 21/50. Neither here nor there.
