Switzerland has plenty of towns and cities with the names of things such as Apples and Bière and Egg is no exception. While “Egg” doesn’t mean anything in German but tourists from English-speaking places know how to make a place look silly.

The tram-train called the Forchbahn goes from Zürich to the town of Esslingen to connect the suburbs along the line to jobs in the city. Now known as the S18, it is a part of the ZVV municipal railway network, which makes its fares easy to calculate. The S18 is also my favourite ZVV S-Bahn line because it goes along the ridge on the top of a range of hills offering great views of the valley below.

Some of the stations are underground making it look like a metro line while it shares tracks with the trams on ground level in the city. This flexible mode of transportation allows the train to run on standard gauge rails at high speed and adapt to narrow urban streets even if it’s six carriages long. Other tram-trains can be found in St. Gallen and Karlsruhe where it is popular in German-speaking parts of the world.

I forgot to bring a hard-boiled egg so I guess the next most German thing to do was to get a Kinder egg.
