Traveling by train is really convenient for whose who enjoy hopping on and off to explore different towns and cities that are on the way to somewhere else. These are the places I wouldn’t otherwise be able or willing to visit on a standalone trip. Happily, in Switzerland the same can be done on one of their many ferries that hop around the shores of the many scenic lakes.
One such opportunity surfaced when I traveled on the Gotthard Panorama Express. I took one of the earlier departures and stopped by Flüelen to explore the terminus of the Gotthard Panorama Express. What made this town so special that the all first class service has to start and end here? Nothing. Really, it’s nothing.
The whole reason why this was made the transfer point was because of geography. It is the endpoint of the ferry and in the middle of the valley with a railway line passing through it. Just like Luzern, the pier is only a 100 meter walk away from the train station making it convenient for tourists too posh to walk for long distances.
Worried about time? Don’t be, there’s nothing to do here except a coffee with a view.
You don’t know how small you are until you go far.
