The battery and US Army base under the Golden Gate Bridge was active until 1994. The Spanish started building it in 1776 and then it was taken over by Mexico when it battled for independence. After the Spanish-American War, the US seized California and continued using the area as a military base as Fort Winfield Scott.

Back when it was constructed in 1912, the barracks were among the most elaborate in the country. The parade ground had lay fallow but the Spanish Colonial buildings are remarkably different from the rest of the area. This was the headquarters of the Bay Area’s coastal defenses. The concrete remains of the old battery still remain overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge.
