The fish ladder at the dam in Grand Rapids lets fish lie trout and salmon move upstream and bypass the dam. There are additional fish ladders in upstream dams so fish can spawn as they did thousands of years ago. The fish ladder was designed to allow fish through while preventing invasive species from the Atlantic from entering the water system. This and other efforts to stop the sea lamprey have reduced its population by 90% since the establishment of the Canada-US Great Lakes Fishery Commission.

What makes this fish ladder different was its designer. Joseph Kinnebrew designed the ladder with a bridge on top of it so residents could watch how the ladder worked – it also made the area very popular for fishing.
