Two ferries connect Howe Island to mainland Ontario. The west end ferry runs every half hour with breaks for crew at lunch and dinner, the east end ferry runs on an as-needed basis with no schedule because it only holds three cars at a time. While the west end ferry has a proper dock and can carry 18-ton trucks, the east end ferry is operated by a single crew member and shuttles cars on a cable ferry guided across the channel.
There’s nothing on the island except St. Philomena’s Church. There are no stores and no gas stations. A local resident was walking his dog and I had a quick chat with him. A lot of the people who live there moved after retirement.
“You learn to live with it,” he said.
I guess you do.
