When the John Hancock Building in Chicago was completed in 1969 it was the second tallest building in the world after the Empire State Building, but only if you include the height of its 350-foot tall spires. Today, it’s roof height of 344 meters is barely remarkable.
The observation deck on its 94th floor is a sham, the toilets have burnt light bulbs, the glass is dirty, and the elevators are falling apart. The northwest corner of the building was closed for renovations but there wasn’t a corresponding 25% discount for the loss of access. It’s managed by French company Montparnasse 56 which also runs the Montparnasse Towers observation deck in Paris. Avoid it and go to Sears Tower instead.
