This small town consisting of just a handful of streets lined with two to three storey buildings is undoubtedly the best place to have curry chicken bread in Malaysia. This town is out of the way and feels a little like what a cowboy would find in western movies from the mid-20th century. The buildings have paint peeling off and the roads have little or no markings on them, all that’s preventing you from driving down the wrong side of the road is common sense. Shop owners likely live just above their shops in a traditional southern Chinese architectural feature.

There are a dozen restaurants up and down the main street that serve authentic curry chicken bread in Kampar. They all looked the same (though locals will probably tell you there are differences) so I went into the largest restaurant with the green canopy. Curry chicken bread could be classified as a sandwich; it’s a huge hollowed out load of bread with a crispy crust and filled with spicy curry and chicken on the inside. I didn’t need anything else, I had filling carbohydrates, something to dip the bread in, and lots of meat all in one neat package.
