Lake Konstanz is named after the German city of Konstanz. It sits comfortably on the border with Switzerland just an hour away from Zürich making it the idea cross-border shopping destination for low tax items. The old town centre itself is quite charming with safe pedestrianised streets and street performers hawking for your spare Euros as you return with bags of shopping.

The lake is shared by Germany, Austria, and Switzerland and there are no defined borders agreed by the three nations. The three countries each have their own opinion on if there are borders and if so where they might be. You could either be in no-man’s land or all three countries at once depending on whose police you ask.

In the old town, the Kaiserbrunnen is a popular spot for street performers and the Konstanzer Münster is the main church. The Rhientorturm sits at the entrance to the lower Rhine river that defines Swiss, French, and German borders further downstream. Right across the Rhine is a place that tourists hardly visit but Swiss shoppers gladly frequent – Kaufland supermarket.

There, you can find delicious Thüringer German sausages, Berliner currywurst ketchup, and Bavarian sweet mustard. All the goodies that are 404 – Not Found even in supermarkets in the Swiss-German regions. Load up and cross back into Switzerland, but don’t look suspicious or you might be taxed!
