At over 60 kilometres long for the trip between Biasca and Disentis, you’re sure to enjoy a whole hour of fun on the Lukmanierpass. Though if you go with the speed limit of 80km/h through most of the pass it’ll be over in less than 45 minutes.
At its highest, the Lukmanierpass is just over 1900 meters above sea level and offers a view of the snowy Lepontine Alps, under which the Gotthard tunnels run. Half of the pass is in the Romansh-speaking region on Graubünden so there are Romansh road signs and names like the Lai da Sontga Maria, or Lake of St. Mary, which is frozen over until the end of spring.
Along the way, you’ll pass by numerous little villages where you will be required to reduce your speed, and for good reason. Many of the older buildings were built without sidewalks and roads in mind and intrude into the driving lane, some sections of the road also have bad camber due to the deceivingly tight turns.
Difficulty: 3/5, two-lane road the whole way with narrow and tricky hairpin turns
