As one of the more obscure panorama routes, the Luzern-Engelberg express isn’t frequented by tourists as much as the Gotthard Panorama Express. If you travel in first class and get on the panorama carriage in the front, it’s likely that you’ll be up there all by yourself. Unfortunately, I was so comfortable that I fell asleep for half the journey there.

I actually went on this train by mistake as I mistook it for a train that wet up a mountain…Engelberg actually just means Angel Mountain in German. But worry not, if you find Engelberg too boring for your tastes, Luzern is only 45 minutes away on the return trip. Interestingly, another themed express train also runs on the same route, so I took the Ski- und Wander-Express on the way back.

My tip: try both, you never know which one you’ll like better.

This electric train is much older with refurbished carriages from decades ago. The wood-themed interior is always a tell-tale sign. Unfortunately, this classic train is not air-conditioned so you’ll have to sit next to one of the slidable windows to catch some air in summer. As it’s name suggests, the train does have plenty of space for skis and bicycles in a storage area suitable for serving holidaymakers in both summer and winter.
