Minnesota looks flat from above, approach to MSP

What’s there for an Asian kid in the mid-western plains? Friendship and fellowship! Several Minnesotans were in Hong Kong on exchange and I met them in a University prayer group. To be honest, I didn’t think I’d ever meet them again after they left, but I was wrong.

Come 2016 and I get the chance of a lifetime to visit Minnesota, knowing I’d probably only ever get to go once I made the most of it. Kit, a friend from the prayer group kindly offered to host me in his basement and even picked me up from the airport! I loved his huge 1990’s Buick Park Avenue, it’s a classic body-on-chassis all-American landyacht.

Downtown Minneapolis

“You see, I figured that if I kept this car I’d be saving myself money not paying for a new car and I get to go through narrow roads first. Ain’t nobody stupid enough to play chicken with my Buick.” ~ Kit

Rollercoasters!

Minneapolis is full of wonders that only locals know about. Kit brought me around to meet Emily, who was also in the same prayer group and we had delicious fried chicken! We also had a BBQ at a friend’s place in Edina and visited an amusement park with one of the oldest wooden rollercoasters in the world. Who’d have thought there was so much to do in the middle of the plains!? Apart from fried chicken, I got to try out Dippin Dots for the first time.

The serene Mississipi

Minnesota is also the home of the source of the Mississippi, though some dispute whether the source is actually in Lake Itasca, the view of the mighty Mississippi was an experience in itself. Maybe its because we were upstream, but the Mississippi looked serene, there were people fishing, sunbathing, and having a picnic on its banks, not scary at all.

Kit and I foraging through to Minehaha Falls

One of my favourite spots there was the Minehaha Falls. Kit suggested we go to an open air concert that night and we had some time, so we drove to a beautiful natural park and foraged our way down to the falls.

“Trust me, it’s safe!” ~ Kit

And boy was it worth the hike!
