Mönchengladbach isn’t a hotspot for tourism. Most tourists can’t even get its name right. You can look up the origins of its stance name on Wikipedia that claims it was changed twice because it could’ve been confused with two other places in Germany. Try and beat that for being an unassuming city.

It’s most well known for being home to the Gladbach Abbey, named after a creek that flows through the city. It was established in 974 and the city grew with it along the centuries. Just down the street from the abbey is the classical Haus Erholung, built in the 19th century and now used as an event space.

Other sites include Kapuzinerplatz, a town square paved with cobblestone patterns. The Altes Zeughaus is now the Karnevalmuseum, dedicated to curating 3000 objects on the history of the carnival in German-speaking countries just before lent.
