At just over an hour away from Geneva or about a half-hour away from Lausanne, Montreux is just close enough to admire sunset with dinner after work in the summer and just far enough to miss sunset with dinner after work in the winter. Being near the easternmost point of the lake, it is perfect to watch the sun set on the lake with the mountains flanking the lake.

My “Garden of Eden”

My favourite Italian restaurant there is called Au Parc and I like their calzone and Mövenpick-only dessert creations. Outdoor seating is generous and service is faster than most restaurants in the French-speaking part of Switzerland.

Sunset

My life there aside, Montreux is famous for its annual Jazz Festival, being the last town Freddie Mercury of Queen lived in before he died, and its old market building where the Freddie Mercury statue is located.

Contrary to foreigner’s belief, there are a lot of events you can enjoy for free in the Montreux Jazz Festival. There’s also plenty of street food and tent shops along the lake to satisfy all your hunger, thirst, and shopping needs.

Apart from the statue of Freddie Mercury holding a microphone in the air, his former studio is now a free museum inside the casino. The museum takes you through the musical career of the legendary singer-songwriter and even has some of the original equipment in the studio room.

Lac Léman

If you love music, you’ll love Montreux.
