Manet, Monet, Renoir, Degas, Van Gogh, Gauguin Da Vinci, Medici, the National Gallery of Art is to Washington, D.C. What the Louvre is to Paris. Except it’s free and there isn’t a massive line to get in. It’s a democratically operated institution, unlike the capitalist enterprise from the so-called French Republic.

Famous paintings of the Rouen Cathedral by Monet and Van Gogh’s self-portrait are hung on the walls of this museum, but I think the most fascinating pieces are American furniture from two centuries ago. Visitors should take advantage of being in America to enjoy deeply American art.

Spend most of your time enjoying American pointing by Cole, Sergeant, Whistler, and Homer and you won’t be disappointed. I find American impressionism to be photo-like and remarkably realistic. If I had a bone to pick with the museum it would be the lack of German Renaissance paintings and the absence of Magritte. But those are minor complaints.
