During the first quarter of the 20th century, 30,000 men worked to dig the New York Subway. The work was dangerous and collapses were frequent with many of those who died unnamed Italian and Irish immigrants, back then seen as less than desirable. All this work was undertaken when trams and horse-drawn buggies Still roamed the city streets.

The museum’s location, though obvious, isn’t easy to find. It has been fittingly repurposed in the unused Court St. station with the only entrance being the iconic green staircase that is easy to mistake for an actual subway station. It’s not just trains inside, there are buses, trolleybuses, and trolleys, in addition to trains.

The gift shop is a gem in itself. I visited five museums that day and only bought merchandise at the transit museum.
