Apart from having a settlement that goes back a thousand years, Nazi rally grounds, and the Palace of Justice for the Nürnberg Trials it also has one of three DB railway museums, the other ones being in Halle and Koblenz. Despite the beauty of its medieval walls and churches the railway museum is what sucked me into Nürnberg.

After I looked at my favorite trains, I took the U-Bahn into the old city and walked through the thick city walls to see a perfectly protected old town complete with businesses, fortifications, and residences. The castle on the top of the hill offers commanding views of the city below with its charming church steeples and red gabled roofs.

Within the ancient walls there is an old city hall, the famous baroque Egidenskirche, the gothic Frauenkirche, Schöner Brunnen water fountain, and stone bridges spanning the Pegnitz. Be sure to visit one of the numerous Nürnberger sausage stands for the full experience.
