The state capital of Washington is a sleepy city called Olympia. It was known as Cheetwood to the indigenous peoples before being renamed by the Europeans. Washington became American territory in 1853 and a wood capitol was built. The current legislative building wasn’t completed until 1928.
The Capitol Building has the tallest masonry dome on the continent at 287 feet tall. All of the granite and sandstone came from within the state. A replica of the state constitution is displayed in the Secretary of State’s office for public viewing. Quirks of the building include a public restaurant and a time capsule to be opened in 2076.
Washington has a state everything. A state ship, state song, state tartan, state tree, state vegetable, state waterfall, state frog, state bird, state dance, state fish, state mammal, state flag, state flower, state folk song, state fossil, state fruit, state gem, state grass, state insect, state marine mammal, state oyster, and state seal.
