The old Pabst factory used to be the largest beer manufacturer in America. It spanned seven city blocks and provided a beer break to employees every three hours. Workers could drink as much as they linked as long as they performed their job. Best Place was named after Jacob Best, the founder of Pabst, then called Best Beer.
One of his sons started Plank-Road Brewery, which went bankrupt and was sold to Frederic Miller, today Miller’s Brewery. After Jacob Best died, he passed his Brewery to his fourth son Phillip Best, who married his daughter to Frederick Pabst. Today, the brewery is named after him.
Chicago used to be the beer capital of America, it was ten times larger than Milwaukee. But the crown was given to Milwaukee after the Chicago fire of 1871 consumed all of its great breweries. After Pabst took the company’s reins, he moved his desk from the steam paddle ship he used to captain to his new office in the city. The former office floor is now a venue for events and weddings.
