The first time I heard of Providence was when I watched snippets of the legal reality TV show “Caught in Providence”, which with a northeastern accent sounds like “Court in Providence”. I thought it was a rather clever use of accents to play on the theme of the show being based around a courtroom. But I’ve come to known a landmark of Providence even before that – the news building that Superman works in is actually based off a building in Providence, they just plopped a globe on the top.
Apart from being in the Superman comic, Providence is also known for having “rich” American history that stretches back a measly few hundred years. As one of the first 13 colonies that later formed the republic, Rhode Island is full of old academic and religious institutions. This includes several university campuses boasting a history tracing back to the 19th century and the oldest Baptist church in the country.

More modern institutions include private libraries and public museums, but with Boston and New York City just a few hours drive away I’d really recommend spending time there instead.
