The first thing that attracted me to this route was the peculiar name of its terminus – Bière. It means beer in French. My initial intention was only to take the train there, but the route was so scenic I just had to write about the view.

The R122 train takes you from the coast of Lake Geneva all the way up to 400m above sea level in the rolling hills of Vaud. It passes by two castles, one of which is right next to the tracks. Although the Chardonnay Château isn’t in the valley of Chardonnay, it is still a beautiful location with a commanding view of the lake below.

If you are in Lausanne or Geneva and have time to spare, take relaxing ride in the Vaudois valley on the R122. Don’t expect the line to be on time though, the train was delayed in both directions despite using exclusive tracks.

Inside the train, pretty standard, but no first class!
