Almost smack in the middle between Edmonton in the north and Calgary in the south lies Red Deer – a former railway divisional point station that has a town around it. The Calgary and Edmonton Railway completed in 1890 was the economic driving force of Red Deer. The now-heritage train station was built in 1910 to serve the settlement with a reception centre and a community centre.
During the two world wars, citizens would depart, and some would return to this station with the free transportation offered by the British Army. It existed until 1985 and the city is now completely car-dependent. There is plenty of parking around the station to serve customers of the Real Canadian Superstore and even its main streets have free parking.
