There are two things that I really enjoy about Rigi: it has two railways going up and down the opposite sides of the mountain to offer different views and both railways are included as a normal rail line with no supplement charged. What I didn’t do so well was visiting on a very windy winter day when the windspeed topped 41km/h with 96km/h gusts blowing hard specks of ice all over your face.

Windy situation

The view is diverse; on one side you have Lake Luzern and the lakeside towns and the other side features an endless stretch of snowy mountains. There is a hotel at the top and near the top, most notably being some of the first spas and resorts in Switzerland catering to rich foreigners in the 19th century, but not too much commerce at the top. The restaurant was closed the day I visited.

The train ride isn’t too spectacular as the seats are quite hard on the back and the ride takes longer than it should. That said, they didn’t charge a surcharge so if you’re on a budget, Rigi is a low-cost version of Pilatus and the Schilthorn, which are also in the area around Luzern.
