While all the nice national museums are in Ottawa, the nice provincial museums are up to just as high a standard in Toronto. The ROM is the biggest brother of the provincial museums in the city. Spanning three maze-like floors, the museum tells the story of Earth from the age of dinosaurs to neoclassicism.
The museum has really taken interpretive displays to a whole new level. Egyptian murals are faithfully restored with modern pieces filling in the gaps, Rococo furniture is tastefully displayed in a replica room, and silverware is properly placed with matching fine China. The ROM deserves full marks when it comes to showing a North American audience the ways of the old world.
The natural history portion of the museum is dominated by dinosaur skeletons – a huge hit for tourists. But if you’ve already been to a dozen other natural history museums, taxidermied animals all look the same.
