Right below the more iconic Neuschwanstein Castle, this little brother is never jealous because it’s got a storied history of its own. Sitting next to the border with modern day Austria this was the home where King Ludwig II grew up, who later built the more architecturally majestic Neuschwanstein Castle.
Hochenschwangau itself has had a long history, existing as a more primitive structure in the 13th century for the Knights of Schwangau, it was later upgraded to a hunting lodge in the 18th century, and the current building was built in the mid-19th century. A very expensive royal hunting lodge indeed.
The slope is very slippery in winter so do be careful. I slipped and fell and broke the screen on my iPhone SE while on my way up. Head to the Neuschwanstein Castle with their guided tour deals online and be sure to come early on a morning train from Munich to beat the crowds.
