If you really want to visit the “Plymouth Rock” of Switzerland then you have to visit Schwyz. Schwyz is the capital of the canton of Schwyz and as you can guess the name of the entire country comes from this one small canton. Nobody really knows the true etymology of the name, maybe that’s why the nearby mountains are called the Mountain of Myths.
There are two main museums in the town: the Museum of the Swiss Charters of Confederation and the Swiss National Museum. The first proudly displays all the original documents that led to the modern foundation of Switzerland and the second is on the history, economy, and culture of Alpine life. Both are worth visiting and both are included in the Swiss Museums Pass.

If you walk around and look up at the flagpoles, you’ll notice that the cantonal flag of Schwyz and the national flag of Switzerland bear a resemblance to each other. The history and origin of the Swiss flag is also explored in the museums.
