The Simplon Pass in Switzerland is one of the most iconic and accessible driving routes in the Swiss Alps. Being right on the highway it is easily on the way to and from many cities between the French and German speaking parts of Switzerland. I actually stumbled upon this area without knowing its significance and decided to stop by because of the beautiful Stockalper Tower.
There’s really nothing quite like it (apart from the Rocky Mountains) with its been lawns in the foreground of patches of snow in the middle of summer. In some places, the snow can be a whole foot thick but the weather still accommodates summer clothing. What a wonder!
Of course, you have to see the Simplon Hospice, which is the long building just below the Stockalper Tower. The eagle sitting on top of a peak also seems to be a very popular spot with tourists on road trips, but don’t ask me about its history, I only visited by a happy accident.
Difficulty: 1/5, easy peasy highway
