Best known for its portrait gallery of American presidents and the home to Gilbert Stuart’s unfinished painting of George Washington that became the likeness for the one dollar bill, it is the finest collection of classical and modern American portraits. To say that its art is an understatement, it is a collection of memories of the most influential people to have lived in the country.

Since the last time I visited, Donald Trump’s photo has been added and is the only president not to have a painting hung in the gallery, only a photograph. Trump’s portrait faces the gallery’s exit and is directly opposite the portrait of Representative John Lewis surrounded by the faces of other black equal rights activists.

The place is mainly for portraits. Cities like Detroit and Chicago have way more examples of American furniture, murals, impressionism and landscapes.
