There are two places to visit. This downtown Washington, D.C. location on the national mall and the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia. Visit both for free.
The first floor exhibits are only interesting for anyone who has never been to an airport. You can board the B747 and DC-7, but they’re only partial hulls. It would be best if there was a complete aircraft for visitors to take a look inside. It’s more about the history of civil aviation than it is about the intricacies of air operation. For example, I would’ve liked to see inside a recreated control tower to try my hand at using a light gun signal.

The second floor is where all the interesting space stuff is. The original Apollo 11 command module, lunar exploration suit, and Mars rover replicas are all on permanent display. I recommend no more than an hour here before driving out to Virginia for the really good stuff.
