SONIC claims to be “America’s Drive-in”, and rightly so. With over 3000 stores around the country SONIC is America’s only remaining large scale drive-in restaurant with car hops. During the interwar period, drive-ins were a popular style of restaurant because all it needed was a carpark, and with the boom of the American automotive industry it seemed like a no brainer. At one point, even McDonalds was once a drive-in restaurant!
Maybe people could afford table service after the war, or drive-ins were tired of patrons stealing their cutlery, but they are a rare find nowadays. Although it costs as much as any other fast foodchain, SONIC really ought to up their prices just for the experience alone; I’ve never seen anything quite like it! All you have to do is pull up to a menu board, press a button to order, and wait for your food to be delivered to your car by a roller skating teenager.
Reality is that America has changed, but you can still experience a slice of 1940’s midwestern hospitality at a SONIC’s in the middle of nowhere.
