With 14 hairpin turns in the first 16 corners on the single-lane serpentine approach to the peak from the Swiss side, the Splügenpass is one of the trickiest Alpine passes in Switzerland…or is it? The pass crosses into Italy over its peak at over 2,100 meters above sea level.
The actual village of Splügen is actually at about 1,500 meters above sea level, so you are really only ascending about 600 meters from the bottom of the pass to its peak. There are plenty of places to stop by for a photo, but the road is very narrow so do watch out when you get out of your car.
