Known for having the same name as Homer Simpson’s town, Springfield is also famous for being the place where Abraham Lincoln spent much of his adult life before he became president. Being proud of this esteemed former resident, Springfield proudly invites you to the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Library and Museum and the his former house where his wife and two sons once lived.

Although you have to pay to go into the Presidential Library and Museum, it is well worth the visit as the exhibits bring you through the life of Lincoln, just remember to start from the log cabin where he was born and not the exhibit on Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C.

Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library

The National Parks Service offers free tours to the house of Lincoln and it can only be accessed via a tour as they need to protect the furnishings of the house. The wait can be long in summer months but the engaging tour and educational experience is well worth it.

Just around the corner from the Presidential Library and Museum is the Old State Capitol, a stately building that is now a free museum allowing you to visit the former chambers where state laws were drafted and passed. Around the Old State Capitol is a preserved downtown area that looks like it’s been around since Lincon’s time. The building that housed the law firm that Lincoln worked in is now a visitor’s center.
