Also known in German as the Verkhershaus Luzern, the Swiss Transport Museum is the most visited museum in all of Switzerland – home to over 500 museums in the entire nation. It is so popular that it’s not even included in the list of museums covered for free by the Swiss Museum Pass. Though I had to pay half price for it, it was well worth my 16 Francs.

There are entire buildings dedicated to each sector of transport – air, rail, road, and water. There’s even a dedicated exhibit on the history and development of the famous cableways and funiculars of the Swiss Alps. Here, you can participate in free guided tours to learn more about the operations of steam trains or board a decommissioned scientific submarine.

While it’s road and rail exhibits are comparable to those of the Deutsches Museum in Munich, the air transport section is a far cry from the Museum of Flight in Seattle or the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Centre near Washington D.C. At any rate, it is definitely worth seeing if you’re in the area.
