The Illusion of Separation
By Giles Hutchins

If you’ve ever questioned our current state of mind, why we think the way we do, or how Western philosophy became what it is, The Illusion of Separation is a great introductory text. The book introduces the history of modern philosophy and explores how its development led to our beliefs in dualism.

Hutchins presents the effects of dualism to include  the molding our consumerist psyches and guiding decision making processes on the national level. It’s an eye-opening presentation of philosophy that made me more self-aware of my own behavior and of the behavior of those around me. It prompts the reader to think differently about their own way of living and opens them to new frames of reference.

I enjoyed reading the book so much that I even re-read a few chapters and made some notes about it for myself. There’s no better way to start a work day than to question your motivations for work.
