Right on the border with Switzerland, the little town of Tirano depends on tourists flowing from Switzerland to keep its economy afloat. In fact, there’s a Swiss railway station that serves as the starting point of the Bernina Express right in the centre of town.

The urban centres of Tirano are Siamese twins, the Basilica della Madonna is a 10 minute walk from the train station and its plaza is surrounded with shops in 16th century shops. Closer to the larger part of town, the Chiese San Martino forms the other urban centre with several blocks of businesses stretched around it. The two centres are connected by a main road – State Road 38.

Walk along the main road to Torre Torelli to see the 12th century tower, then make a right to go up the hill towards ruins of Castellaccio. From there, you have a commanding view of the town and the laundry hanging in the backyard of local houses. Go back down to get lunch, pizzas in a restaurant start any just €7, a steal compare to the prices in Switzerland.

If you have the time, head out to Miralago to do a lap around the Lago di Poschiavo. Shielded by the mountains around it, this late at nearly 1000 meters above sea level is a quiet sanctuary for thought.

Lago di Poschavio in the Swiss side.

If it’s cheap and it’s beautiful, just go.
