Constructed in just 16 months, the USS Hornet aircraft carrier is the eighth and final ship to bear the name. It recovered the Apollo 11 crew after they landed in the ocean and performed it’s final mission retrieving the Apollo 12 crew. It’s permanently docked at the same pier the Doolittle raid on Tokyo started from, which was the first time the US bombed the he islands of Japan.

There are docent-led tours for an additional fee throughout the ship. But if you wanted to see the island, it’s included in New York City’s USS Enterprise, so I didn’t opt for the extras. Below the hangar, there are exhibits on black people and women in the military.

There are 14 planes in the hangar, but if you’ve been to an aviation museum you’ve probably seen them all. The guides recommended 3 hours here, but I say an hour should do the job if you’ve already been on another carrier.
