The little panhandle in the south of the Netherlands has a border with Germany and Belgium, making it a border of three nations. On the Dutch part of the border lies a little town called Vaals, which is just an international bus ride away from Aachen in Germany. The one bus line gets you from Germany to the Netherlands for one fare, there’s also an express bus that goes from Maastricht to Aachen in about an hour.

I crossed over this unguarded border just to see what the level of integration was like between EU countries, and it’s seamless. Those in the border are bilingual and restaurant menus are available in German and Dutch making cross-border business easier than trying to make out Bavarian German. The food is good and reasonably priced, German debit cards will also work across the border. Take an afternoon off, have lunch across the border and cross back knowing you’ve traveled and not hurt your wallet.
