Every April, Vancouver’s streets bloom with cherry blossoms that came from Japan as a gift in honour of Japanese Canadians who joined the Canadian army in the First World War. The city has turned this natural phenomenon into an annual festival to cash in on its cultural ties with the local Japanese community. Flights, hotels and rental cars are more expensive during the festival, so I decided to visit on the weekend after the festival to score cheap flights and gamble that I’d still be able to see the pink trees.

There are a number of things going on during the festival such as guided tours, food, and a Japanese cultural pavilion. Still, I think the best thing to do is to hit all the spots, UBC, Yew St. North of 4th Ave., QE Park, 39th Ave. east of Cambie St., and 53rd Ave. east of Sunset. I brought my camera, a good pair of shoes, and a raincoat.
