If you squint, you might just be able to make out the letters that spell ‘Versailles’

Where that famous treaty was signed – The Treaty of Versailles that ended WWI and more or less started WWII. The town is beautiful as is the Palace of Versailles, which Louis XIV resided in after he decided not to live in the Louvre Palace in Paris. I can see why he made that decision, Versailles has plenty of green open space, a huge palace with beautifully decorated rooms, and fresh air all around. It did make him unpopular and eventually cost him the crown though.

The palace is well equipped with self-guided tour headsets available in several languages and provides shuttles between its massive distances. While in the palace you’re well catered for, but the railway stations don’t even have toilets (or functioning ticketing machines). If you’re in Paris anyways, head to Versailles straight away, you’ll find it a lot more amiable.
