Although I’m aware that Wall isn’t just about Wall Drug Store, I’m also conscious of the fact that most tourists will only visit Wall to see the Wall Drug Store. A true story of an American Dream, the Wall Drug Store was grown by a man whose brothers all got rich from chasing gold out west. Ted Hustead, the man that owned Wall Drug poached thirsty travellers on the road in the middle of nowhere.
Wall has more than just a drug store, there’s a cafeteria, a souvenir shop, a tourist trap wild west themed courtyard, a small gallery of the store’s history, and even 5¢ coffee – the only thing that inflation hasn’t ruined. Be sure to try their quirky elk meat burger, it’s really not bad
“Free ice water”
Read the sign along the interstate, they were so prevalent that I could see them over a hundred miles away from Wall. I was surprised to see the store dominating freeway advertising signs in a time where social media is covered with targeted advertising. It really works, I didn’t know about Wall Drug until someone told me about it in Iowa! If you’re a marketing student and you want to see an advertising success story, look no further than Wall, SD.
