The last remaining blockhouse in Nova Scotia is in Windsor, NS at Fort Edward National Historic Site. New Brunswick also has its own last blockhouse at St. Andrews, so there are very few of these left. Major Charles Lawrence ordered it built in 1750. In 1779, Flora MacDonald spent a harsh winter with her husband Capitan Alan MacDonald. She returned to her Scottish hometown of Skye later in life and the story of her loyalty remains a legend in Scotland.
The British built the fort as a strategic chokepoint for trade between the Acadians and “Indians” in Grand Pré and the French in Louisbourg. The Acadians were later deported by the British along the coast near this site. The fort protected the road to Halifax, had a view of the water, and could detect attacks by any non-British players in the area.
The town has a lot of old murals that are falling apart, the only mural that looked like it had been repainted recently was a Coca-Cola advertisement. The other side of town has the Shand House Museum, a preserved Queen Anne-style house. There is also the Haliburton House Museum built for Scottish author Thomas Chandler Haliburton inside what is now a large green park on the top of a hill. Both these houses are only open during summer.
